The energy policy of the Georgian government supported by a number of IFIs, aims at utilising the hydroenergy potential in the country in order to overcome the existing energy crisis.
But effectively, this policy has the potential to cause significant negative impact on the environment, to drastically change the social and demographic situation in Georgia’s mountain areas and to devastate the existing cultural heritage.
In order to ensure that former mistakes of the energy sector planning are taken into account and that the process of Georgia’s power sector development is sustainable, it is essential that the international financial institutions enforce a moratorium on the funding of any large dam construction in Georgia and to ensure public participation in the development of the power sector’s strategic planning process. ENP Implementation Final Report
This report is one of a series that resulted from an initiative entitled Towards a Peoples Partnership in the ENP which aimed to increase the awareness and capacity of civil society within the European Union and countries covered by the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) to engage effectively in the cooperation between the EU and its neighbouring countries. The countries involved in this project were Egypt, Georgia, Moldova, Morocco, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and Ukraine. A report has been produced for each of the six countries on the results of the civil society workshop held in that country.
