Construction of Shuakhevi power station launched

Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili and Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze participated in a ceremony to launch the construction of a new Shuakhevi HPP in Adjara on September 16. The Prime minister claims that the new HPPs will provide energy independence for the country.

Representatives of the Ministry of Environment said the construction, which damaged travertine was not illegal because the territory did not have status of natural monument. However, the Agency of Reserved Territories stated the vicinities will have the status in order to avoid similar facts in future.

Hydro-power will be an important component to developing a sustainable domestic energy supply in Georgia. However, several hydro-power plant (HPP) construction contracts were signed without the input of the communities those HPPs would affect or an assessment of their environmental impacts. To ensure a more participatory process that accounts for community and environmental concerns, EWMI grantee, Green Alternative, successfully facilitated greater collaboration between the government, CSOs, the private sector, and the public on the issue.

We would like to respond to the Channel 9 TV prime time newscast of April 22 dealing with the ongoing discussions over the Khudoni plant construction. Our attention was drawn to the radically incorrect statement made by Kakha Kaladze, Energy and Natural Resources Minister, addressed to the non-governmental organizations who have been criticizing the Khudoni plant construction. Mr Kaladze markedly said in the TV report that: "The future of our country cannot be sacrificed for some non-governmental organizations and the funding they receive from abroad for certain suspended projects."

Keti Gujaraidze, a policy analyst at Green Alternative, said that  the construction of HESes will have a negative impact on the environment and that the construction of so many HESes in one region raises many doubts.
