Green Alternative statement regarding the planned signing of the Georgia-EU association agreement in June 2014
Association Green Alternative welcomes the planned signing of the Georgia-EU association agreement in June 2014 and Georgia’s desire to become a full member of the European energy community.
We strongly believe that fundamental reforms are urgently needed in order to approximate Georgian legislation with that of the European Union with respect to the environment and energy.
Existing environmental legislation in Georgia, including legislation governing environmental impact assessments, regretfully does not comply with relevant EU directives and cannot ensure public participation in decision-making processes. Examples where such shortcomings persist are evident in cases like the Dariali hydropower plant project, where the public was not involved in decision-making related to the project.
Green Alternative calls on the Georgian government to urgently develop horizontal environmental legislation in order to ensure the successful implementation of the Association Agreement and the requirements of the European energy community.
