Natural Disaster in Guria in 2023

Climate change in Georgia leads to the activation of natural processes and an increase in the risk of disasters. According to the Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture, more than half of the settlements are at risk from various categories of geological processes. However, the readiness and resilience of the state and local communities to deal with disasters and their consequences is very low.

On September 8, 2023, a landslide and a flood occurred in Guria. These disasters claimed three lives and damaged homes, agricultural land and village infrastructure. As a result of the landslide, it is estimated that more than 800 families will have to be relocated to a safer place. The damage has not yet been fully assessed and people are waiting for help.
