‘No to big dams!’

Tbilisi, July 3, 2012 – A rally organized by Association Green Alternatives ‘No to big dams!’ will take place on July 7, 18:00, in Vake Park.

Alongside with an inflatable dam, the event will feature a photo exhibition showcasing sites that are designated for submersion as a result of Hydropower plant constructions. On the rally, signatures against big dam construction will be collected as well.

Aiming to inform society, the rally is an attempt to bring the attention of Georgian citizens to those negative effects big dam construction can bring to social and natural environment of the country.

Big dams are no longer considered as a source of clean energy as their constructions require forest felling, local community resettlement, submersion of villages, arable lands and cultural monuments, destruction of freshwater and local ecosystem as well as local climate alteration.

Green Alternative and the co-organizers of the rally will call on the government, international financial institutions and investors to stop to finance large dams and to diversify their energy portfolio towards more sustainable energy alternatives.

We would like to remind you that as an initiative of the Georgian government, in 2012, among 15 hydropower plants, big dams such as Khudoni, Nenskra, Namakhvani Cascade, Adjaristskali Cascade are also planned to be constructed.

Member organizations of Civil Solidarity Campaign, ‘Caucasian house’, ‘Greens Movement of Georgia’, ‘Safe Space’ and other non-governmental organizations will also join the event.

Media is invited to attend on: 7 July, 18:00, 2012.
